MEN’S HEALTH: How to Be a Centinarian

mh-13part.jpgAre you aging like an apple, or improving like a fine wine? Your natural health choices will determine how well you age and how long you live.

Aging is a natural part of life that cannot be avoided. Mark Twain suggested that life would be infinitely happier if we were born at the age of 80 and gradually approached being 18. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. But, how well you age is up to you. All men’s health is based on the choices you make day by day.

To keep your muscles toned, joints mobile, organs efficient, thinking acute and skin looking good requires some effort. But the reward is feeling great and looking ‘mah-velous’ into your 60′s, 80′s and beyond. A car doesn’t pass the 200,000 mile mark without some regular maintenance. Why expect anything different from your body?

There are pro-active ways to keep your body from ‘rusting away.’ Do you know them?

Invest in your fitness instead of relying on pharmaceuticals. Taking lots of medication is not what makes you healthy. Just ask 94-year-old men’s health expert Jack LaLane! Apply his principles of movement, fitness, good diet and healthy supplements to help you reach your 100th birthday in style. A study of almost 10,000 men, ages 20-82, found that those who were unfit then became fit through exercise lowered their death rates 44%. It’s never too late to begin exercising. Start while you’re still agile!

Find a good chiropractor. The natural-health doctor’s approach to restoring and maintaining health through exercise, rest, nutrition and a proper functioning nervous system can do wonders through the years. Don’t rely on medicine’s claim to treat diseases after they occur.

Look at what you’re eating. The real ‘fountain of youth’ is found in a healthy diet. A low-calorie, low-carb diet of fish, vegetables and fruits keeps insulin levels low. Insulin accelerates aging, so avoid simple sugars. Make vegetable juices to increase consumption of antioxidants. When you see a 75-year-old woman who looks 45, rest assured she’s juicing her veggies! Try a blueberry-yogurt shake, or fresh carrot juice. They will keep you younger.Take healthy supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and Co Q10. These antioxidants support your immune system and stall the oxidative damage of free radicals in your cells. A University of Florida study found elderly folks who exercised and also took vitamin E actually reversed their aging by decreasing oxidative stress.

Omega-3 fats are vital. Eat more fish, take fish oil capsules (at least one gram a day), and grind some flaxseeds onto your salads.

Ginkgo biloba is a Chinese remedy that enhances blood flow in the brain, maintaining better cognition through the years.

And last, for emotional well-being, maintain loving friendships, keep up social connections, and get a dog! Love and affection not only improves life, but actually extends it. Men’s health can get better as we age, if we follow this plan.
